Whilst Soonchild has been on the road, touring across the country, the directors of Red Earth Theatre have been researching our next show. The Red Tree, an adaptation of the book by award winning, writer and illustrator, Shaun Tan.
This is the second year we’ve been privileged to work with Theatre Design students from this nationally renowned degree course, at Nottingham Trent University.
The students have just 5 weeks to devise, design and realise a production inspired by The Red Tree. Working alongside their lecturer, Sean Myatt – also a brilliant puppeteer and puppetry director in his own right – we’ve mined the content of each and every page.
There are just 126 words in the whole book, accompanied by Shaun Tan’s evocative, poignant and sometimes surreal imagery. It’s been a rich exploration and the seeds of their ideas will help in next phase of research and development for Red Earth’s own version of the The Red Tree, from January 2020 onwards.
There will be a sharing of the immersive production they have created with Year 5 pupils from a Nottingham primary school on Friday 6 December. We can’t wait to see what the audience make of their work and the story.
